EVERY STEP COUNTS

I believe that when people are given the opportunity to succeed, they rise to the occasion. Recently, I started volunteering with an amazing organization that helps people who are struggling with mental health, addictions, and poverty. Twice a week, I lead a group of people who are struggling with mental health: running; practicing mindfulness; and socializing in a safe environment. At each session, I am inspired by the courage of these folks for whom life can be an uphill battle.

Every Step Counts is a unique running and walking program hosted by Victoria Cool Aid Society. This innovative program is designed for people experiencing barriers and challenges with housing, mental health, addiction and other related issues. It is positive and unique, drawing on the wide-reaching and long-lasting benefits of exercise and teamwork to foster self-esteem, confidence, energy and healthy lifestyle choices.

As part of the Goodlife Half Marathon, I will finish-chinook-triathlonbe raising money and awareness for these people who are often marginalized in our society.

People with poor mental health are more susceptible to the three main factors that can lead to homelessness: poverty, disaffiliation, and personal vulnerability. Because they often lack the capacity to sustain employment, they have little income. They often withdraw from friends, family and other people. This loss of support leaves them fewer coping resources in times of trouble. Mental illness can also impair a person’s ability to be resilient and resourceful; it can cloud thinking and impair judgment. For all these reasons, people with mental illness are at greater risk of becoming homeless. donate_now_red_heart
